The Soapstone Mine

Long before the Liberia Community was established, this area was part of the homeland of the Cherokee people.

Cherokee artisans used the soft soapstone found here to carve cooking vessels and ceremonial objects. An old mine shaft once existed nearby, though it was later filled for safety.

This ground reflects centuries of human history and cultural connections.
