A Self-Guided Walking Tour of the Soapstone Grounds

Welcome to the historic Soapstone Baptist Church – among the oldest active African American churches in Upstate South Carolina. It once served as the heart of the Liberia Community nestled beneath the shadow of Table Rock Mountain. This peaceful site tells a powerful story of faith, perseverance, education, and community built by formerly enslaved families after the Civil War on a site used by the Cherokee people for centuries before.
